Richard Reid

Richard Lee Reid was born in Kansas City, Kansas, on April 11, 1942, to Hebert Orlie Reid (1912-2003) and Margaret Earleen Israel Reid (1916-1942).  Following the death of his mother, his father was drafted into World War II, and his grandparents cared for him.  After the war, Herbert married Annette Adams (1920-2004), the stepmother who, along with his father, raised Richard.

He spent his early life in Kansas City and its suburbs, graduating from Shawnee Mission North High School in 1960.  He served in the United States Air Force from 1960-1964, most of the time at Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina.  From 1964-1970, he lived in Southern California, serving in the Long Beach Servicemen’s Center, attending junior colleges, and being involved in other areas of ministry.  In 1970 he moved to Wheaton , Illinois and completed his college education at Wheaton College where he earned both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Arts degree.

On December 8, 1973, he married Wanda Jean Dykstra, whom he had met at Wheaton Graduate School.  Stephen Richard Reid was born to them on November 13, 1974.  From January, 1975, until June of 1978, he attended Grace Theological Seminary in Winona Lake, Indiana, where he earned a Master of Divinity degree.  He pastored the Conservative Congregational Church in Hollandale, Minnesota, from 1978-1981; Cut Bank Evangelical Free Church in Cut Bank, Montana, from 1981-1990; and Village Bible Church in Park Forest, Illinois, from 1990-2004.  During the time in Hollandale, Minnesota, his two daughters were born: Heidi Lynn Reid on May 5, 1979, and Jeanine Lea Reid on May 9, 1980.
Following retirement from full-time ministry in 2004, he served with Interim Pastor Ministries, holding interim pastorates in four Illinois churches: Grace Community Church in Schiller Park, Beecher Community Church in Beecher, Faith Bible Church in Joliet, and Edgewater Baptist Church in Chicago.  In 2009, he published his book, Legacy of Ministry, presenting the principles of ministry that the Lord had taught him through the Scriptures, his mentors, and his years of experience in the pastorate.

Two of his children preceded him into heaven: Heidi in 1979, and Stephen in 1992.  Following a recurrence of his colon cancer; Rich entered the presence of the Lord on September 13, 2011.  He is survived by his wife, Wanda, and daughter, Jeanine, as well as aunts, uncles and cousins.   A private family burial will be held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.  A public memorial service will be held at Village Evangelical Free Church, 14849 93rd Avenue, Dyer, Indiana at  5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 18, 2011.  In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Village Evangelical Free Church of Dyer, Indiana.
