John A. Smith

With deep sadness, we announce the death of John A. Smith on May 12, 2017.  John was a lifelong resident of Matteson, IL: born on October 24, 1932 to Howard and Susan Smith, he raised four children there with his wife Audrey. 

John was a Northern Illinois University Hall of Fame football player, a teacher and Dean at Bloom High School and professor at Chicago State University. His laugh, kindness and love of life, friends and family are legendary.

He loved golfing, woodworking, fishing, camping, boating, 

and cards as well as being an avid reader. 

Survivors include his wife Audrey, his four children Greg Smith, Janine Smith Burns, Diane Erickson and Randy Smith, spouses, fourteen grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Hirsch West End Chapel 3501 W Lincoln Hwy. Matteson, IL 60443 on Saturday May 20, 2017. Visitation 10:00 a.m. until time of Funeral Service 11:30 a.m..

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (www.LLS.org) and the Cancer Research Institute (www.cancerresearch.org).
