Bette Lou Wathen
November 7, 1934 – June 13, 2026
With hearts filled with both sorrow and gratitude, we announce the peaceful passing of Bette Lou Wathen, who entered into eternal rest on June 13, 2026, in Beecher, Illinois, at the age of 91.
Born in Chicago to Edward and Rose Husa, Bette Lou lived a life rich in love, faith, and service. She shared a beautiful marriage with her beloved husband, the late Billy Wathen, and together they were blessed with five children: Jean (Ken) Hughes of Park Forest, Illinois; Ann (Greg) Dimock of Steger, Illinois; and the late Scott Wathen, Lorraine Wathen, and Robert Wathen.
A woman of deep and abiding faith, Bette Lou was a devoted member of Mighty Fortress Lutheran Church. Her caring spirit extended far beyond her family, as she dedicated her professional life to nurturing others—first as a compassionate caregiver and later as a beloved playground supervisor at Strassburg Elementary School in Sauk Village, Illinois, where she touched countless young lives with her warmth and kindness.
Bette Lou possessed a genuine zest for life and cherished nothing more than gathering around a table with loved ones for spirited board games and heartfelt conversation. Her legacy is one of unconditional love, tender care, and the countless ways she made everyone feel valued and special.
She leaves behind a beautiful tapestry of family, including her dear sister, Marilyn Koudelka; cherished grandchildren: Nenia Vallejo, Tiffany Vallejo, Allen Hughes (Sandy), Marie Ramos (John), Matthew Snell, Shawn Murphy, Trisha Hay (Stan), Scott Wathen Jr. (Jennifer), John Wathen (Evelyn), Ashlee Wathen, Emily Ann Dimock, William Dimock, Lillian Dimock, Howard Hughes, Hazel Hughes, and Chelsea Vallejo, as well as the late Pebbles Vallejo (May 29, 2026). Bette Lou's love extends through the generations to sixteen great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, and even two grand-puppies and two great-grand-puppies who brought joy to her final years.
