Saturday, December 9, 2023, God stood with open arms and welcomed his beloved servant, Cary home. Cary Jay Durham was born on August 9, 1971, in Chicago, Illinois. He went to high school at Dunbar Vocational Career Academy. He married Wendy (Blackful) in Park Forest on November 21, 2003. He attended Eastern Illinois University where he studied African American Studies. Through persistence and perseverance, Cary earned his Bachelor in Business Administration from Olivet Nazarene University. He was also actively pursuing his Master of Leadership from Olivet Nazarene University at the time of his passing. He served as an Office Clerk of the Cook County Courts for 25 years. With his beaming personality, quick-witted sarcasm, and lively disposition, he made the monotony of work that much more of a better place to be. He was initiated into Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Tau Theta chapter, on March 22, 1995. He was the first of three members followed by Kendrick Hall and Juan Lyle. As the sole student enrolled at EIU in the Fall of 1996 and newly initiated, Cary served as the linchpin for the continuity of the Tau Theta Chapter by presenting four outstanding members (Dr. James Harden, James Evans, Demond Andrews, and Ron Lofton) into the fraternity. With the introduction of these men. Tau Theta slowly began and continues to flourish with the mantra "Long Live Tau Theta". Cary was an avid sports lover, especially the Yankees. He had many interests including superheroes, cars, and comics (Marvel and DC). just to name a few. Grounded by his faith, Cary habitually started his day with a scripture. He emphasized high morale, strong character, and an unwavering faith in Jesus Christ in his house and with the rearing of his children. He was a devoted father, who took pride in watching his son develop while coaching him in baseball. He was also a devout partner who deeply adored his family and took pride in being a loving husband. Cary leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and enduring memories that will forever be cherished by those who were fortunate enough to know him. His family and friends were invaluable to him and it fueled his vigor for life until The Lord brought him home. His parents, Nemire and Mary Durham, and his siblings Regina, Lillian, and Lawrence preceded him in death. Cary is survived by his devoted wife, Wendy Durham, and his children, Leah Pearl Smith, Grant Durham, and Autumn Durham. He also leaves behind his sibling, Gayle Durham, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Carys spirit is rejoicing with the Lord, and may his memory continue to inspire and comfort those who had the privilege of sharing in his journey.
