John A. Redmond, 74, died on September 7, 2015. Redmond had a loving 46-year marriage with his wife, Judy. He is survived by his children, John A. Redmond, Jr. (wife, Deirdra), Jennifer Hunter (husband, Malvin) and Jill Redmond; four grandchildren, Taylor Redmond, Quinn Redmond, Mathew Hunter and Michael Hunter; three brothers and a host of other loving relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, James H. and Ruth C. Redmond and brothers, James H. Jr and Gerald.
Beyond his love and commitment to family, Redmond made a positive influence on the community. As the president and owner of Gainers Gymnastics, Inc., Redmond was often viewed as a father figure to the gymnasts he coached over a 30 year span. He was the first African-American President of the Rich Central High School Parent Teacher Association (PTA), Ombudsman for the City of Chicago Heights and member of the Olympia Fields Public Safety Committee, which he chaired during his tenure.
In his early years, he achieved the status of Eagle Scout through the Boy Scouts of America. He served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1966 as a Special Forces medic. Redmond attended Springfield College, where he participated in football, gymnastics and track and field.
A memorial visitation will be held 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 26, at Lain Sullivan Funeral Home, 50 Westwood Drive, Park Forest, Illinois, 60466. The family will host a private service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Springfield College (263 Alden Street, Springfield, MA, 01109), where the Redmond Family Endowment Fund was established.
