Jon Eric Mendelson. Born 1940, New York City, died Nov. 22, 2014 at home, peacefully, surrounded by family. Emeritus Professor of Environmental Science at Governors State University, Chair of Thorn Creek Nature Preserve Management Commission, field ecologist, land preservationist, musician, beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and friend. He worked tirelessly to acquire land for Thorn Creek Woods and to protect local watersheds, taught courses in ecology to generations of students, played blues and folk with the Moose River Band, grew garlic for Thorn Creeks Garlic Fest, and fashioned mobiles out of gourds for his grandchildren. Survived by his loving wife, Judith Dolan Mendelson, three children, Nina (Riyaz Kanji), Robin (Joss Delage), Claudia (Josh Pincus), and five grandchildren, Laura and Evan Kanji, Miles Mendelson-Delage, Celia and Oliver Pincus. He will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friends of Thorn Creek Woods.
