Kathryn T. Peryam 'Terry'
10/3/1936 - 3/19/2013
After 60 years as a Park Forest resident, educator, and health professional, Terry Peryam (Sloan), 76, passed away at St. James Hospital, Olympia Fields on Tuesday, March 19th at 9:50 AM. At the moment of her passing, she was in the caring arms and loving embrace of her surviving children: Joy (Tim) Swoboda, 48, of Gurnee, IL, David Peryam, 45, of Santa Monica, CA; and her longtime companion, Lorie Mikosz, of Homewood, IL.
Terry is also survived by her treasured granddaughter and namesake Kate Swoboda, 12, of Gurnee, IL, her brother Jack (Marilou) Sloan of Northbrook, IL and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved youngest son, Tom Peryam, her brother Tom Sloan, her loving parents Greg and Kathryn Sloan.
Terry was a graduate of Rich High School in Park Forest. A registered nurse, she completed her training program at St Luke's in Chicago, received a Bachelors of Science from the College of St. Francis in Joliet and a Masters of Science from Governors State University in University Park. The beginning of her career was spent in hospital nursing; the last 24 years of her working life were spent caring for the students and staff of School District #160. As the only nurse in the district, she guided generations of elementary and middle school children through maladies ranging from scraped knees to major cardiac episodes; from broken fingernails to bouts of life threatening asthma, always infusing her exceptional nursing skills with respect and affection for the children. From the time they did their first preschool screening until they moved up and away to high school, Terry was singularly referred to by her students as 'Nurse Terry'.
After she retired, Terry's zest for life and spirit of adventure led her to travel the US and the world with her family and close friends. She especially loved her trips to Ireland, New Zealand, Australia and Hawaii. A lifelong patron and supporter of the Arts, Terry filled her days with season subscriptions to multiple theatre companies, the Lyric Opera of Chicago and was member of The Art Institute of Chicago. Caring and beautifying her home's yard was also a passion. She filled it with beautiful flowers, plants and multiple bird feeders. She was rewarded with a lovely place to live and multiple honors from the Village for her efforts.
Terry is remembered by those she touched as that rare person who truly listened and made others feel special and heard.
