Obituary

Lois Marie (Owens) Powers had a blessed life that ended as she passed away at home on Friday, October 9, 2015. Lois was born on Monday, January 6, 1930 as the first child of her loving parents John Emery and Elizabeth Owens in Gary, Indiana, who affectionately called her "Tootsie." Lois grew up in Gary along with her treasured siblings John, Tom, and Eileen Owens. Lois graduated from Lew Wallace High School and began work as a telephone operator in Gary. It was there that she met the love of her life Thomas Patrick Powers, a World War II veteran. They were married in 1949 and moved to an apartment in Chicago, Illinois, where they created a home for their first daughters, Kathy and Linda. With the family continuing to grow, in 1954 they bought their first home in Park Forest and were blessed with the birth of their third daughter Patti. The couple later designed and built their new dream home in rural Park Forest where they welcomed the birth of their only son Tom. In addition to making a wonderful home for her family, Lois was a very successful businesswoman and was respected for her involvement in the community. Along with her husband, Lois founded and ran two successful businesses. The first supported her family for well over ten years. Lois and Tom partnered with Lois brother to found a second business, which continues to prosper to this day. Her dedication to her church was a very important part of her life. Over the years, she served as president of the Council of Catholic Women (the parish women's group), taught Sunday school, was a Eucharistic Minister, visited the sick, helped plan countless church events, baked hundreds of pineapple upside down cakes for church bake sales, and was once elected 'Woman of the Year.' She was also honored to receive a blessing from the Pope. After she became homebound, it was her great joy to welcome the Bishop of the Diocese of Joliet, R. Daniel Conlon to her home for a personal visit. As time passed, Lois was delighted by the growth of her family, which eventually included her 4 children, 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Lois was a devoted and loving wife, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many. Lois was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by her sister, Eileen Owens of Smyrna, TN, her brothers John (Marge) Owens of Crown Point, IN, and Tom (Pat) Owens of Hebron, IN; her four children, Kathy Mitchell of Lilburn, GA, Linda (Tom) Dujmovich of Marengo, IL, Patti Katz of Eden Prairie, MN, and Tom (Debbie) Powers of Frankfort, IL; her grandchildren; her great-grandchildren; and a great many friends.
