Louis R. Stelter, age 79, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 10, 2015.
Louie is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Jean Stelter; daughters, Janice (Michael) Reading and Denise Counter; grandchildren, Josh (Shannon) Reading, Angie (Calab) Chalmers, Erica Counter and Shannon (Katie) Artman; great-grandchildren, Brooke and Austin Reading, C.J. and Teegan Chalmers and Alex Artman; sisters, Barbara Fitch, Lynn (Bill) Browning, Donna (Charlie) Beckett, Judy (John) Radtke and Cindy Jackson; brothers, Bobby Stelter, Melvin (Kathy) Stelter, Gary (Ginger) Stelter and numerous nieces, nephews, brother and sister in-laws.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Lucille Stelter; mother and father in-law, Leroy and Ethel Thrun; sister Sandra Stelter; brother in-laws, Erwin Fitch and Joe "J.J." Jackson.
Louie was born in South Chicago Heights, IL and at the age of 16 his family relocated to Monee, IL where he resided for 47 years. He worked as a Construction Foreman for DiPaolo Construction for 12 years. He then moved on to own and operate his own business, Stelter Sanitary Service and Jeans Septic Inc. for the next 35 years before retiring. In addition to owning and operating his own business he also started the Monee Fire Protection District in 1972 and served as President of the district for many years. He had the distinction of becoming one of the first firemen to become an EMT for Monee. He served for 30 years as a Sergeant and was then promoted to Lieutenant with the Monee Police Department. Adding to his charitable nature he served on the Monee Volunteer Fire Department for 36 years. 12 of those years he served as Assistant Chief.
He was also an active member of the Moose Lodge of Chicago Heights, member of the Monee Chamber of Commerce and Lions Club of Monee.
In retirement Louie loved spending his time with his grandkids and great-grandkids. He also loved the casino.
Visitation will be held at 2pm until 8pm on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at Monee Funeral Home (5450 W. Wilson Street, Monee, IL 60449)
The funeral service will be held at 11am on Thursday, July 16, 2015 at Monee Funeral Home w/ Pastor Peggy Johnson conducting services. Interment will follow the service at St. Paul UCC Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Monee Volunteer Fire Department, St. Pauls United Church of Christ in Monee and the Monee Police Department.
His legacy will live on through his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and the many many lives he touched.
