Phyllis Tyler Shy was born in Chicago, IL on June 19, 1951, to Arthur Tyler Sr. and Nadine Tyler. One of nine children, she was known for her compassion, dedication, and willingness to help others.Phyllis graduated from Christian Fenger High School in 1969. She later worked as a certified cosmetologist, a job she truly enjoyed. In 1993, she found her true calling in nursing, becoming a Registered Nurse and dedicating over 20 years to patient care. Her empathy and dedication positively impacted many lives.Phyllis had a strong presence and firmly believed in doing what was right. Though small in stature, she was known for her courage. Her no-nonsense personality allowed her to confront life's challenges with strength and determination, always advocating for herself and the well-being of others.One of her greatest joys in life was the birth of her daughter, Bernadette "Bernie," from her union with Bernard Starks. Phyllis and Bernie shared a deep and unbreakable bond, supporting each other through life's challenges. That love expanded when she became a grandmother to Jeremy, whom she adored.She found joy in simple pleasures—skating, playing cards, bowling, and watching some of her favorite TV shows, The Carol Burnett Show, George Lopez, and Mike & Molly. However, some of her happiest moments were spent with family. This was often seen, whenever the Tyler family gathered, laughter would break out at any moment, with Phyllis in the middle, cracking jokes, laughing, and enjoying every moment.Phyllis also found joy in reading God's Word, the Bible. She delighted in learning and discovering new truths, which enriched her faith and perspective on life.On February 26, 2025, Phyllis peacefully fell asleep in death after a courageous battle with illness. In her final moments, her devoted daughter, Bernie, remained by her side—a true reflection of their deep and enduring love. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Tyler Sr. and Nadine Tyler, her sister Jane Clark, and her brothers Arthur Tyler Jr. and Carl Tyler.She leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness, cherished by her daughter and best friend Bernadette Starks-Stiger (Fabian), her grandson Jeremy Starks, siblings: Rita Bourgoyne, Sybil Tyler, Tony Tyler (Judy), Harold R. Tyler (Juanita), and Keith Tyler. She is also fondly remembered by a host of nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, and a host of loving family and friends.Phyllis's legacy of love, laughter, compassion, and support for others will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew her. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
