Shirley Jean Green (nee Tuerck) of Naperville, formerly of Matteson, age 90, passed away on Friday, September 30, 2016. Shirley was born in Belleville, IL December 23, 1925. She moved to Matteson IL in 1961 with her late husband Kenneth H. Green. Mrs. Green was a legislative aide to the late Lynn Brenne, and in 1974 was elected Township Tax Assessor for Rich Township in the south suburbs, an office she held until 1994. Shirley was a Certified Illinois Assessing officer and served as Liaison between the Cook County Assessor and the Township Assessors for fifteen years. After her retirement in 1994 from the Assessors position, she acted as a consultant and assessment analyst for Cook County Assessor Thomas C Hynes and James M Houlihan. Mrs. Green held the office of President of the Cook Township Assessors Organization, President of the Township Officials of Cook County, President of the Illinois Assessment Institute and President of the Township Officials of Illinois. She received an award from the Illinois Township Assessors Association as well as the Marshall Thoreau award for distinguished professional and personal dedication. Mrs. Green served on the Village of Matteson Plan Commission, Economic Development Commission and the Matteson Village Board. The Matteson Area Chamber of Commerce honored Shirley Green with the Athena Award for excellence in her profession, providing valuable community services, and promoting support of professional women. Mrs. Green was a member of the Matteson Library Board, the Chicago Heights Symphony Orchestra Board, the American Cancer Society Board and the Matteson District 162 School Board. She was a member of the Matteson Rotary Club, and served as the first woman president of that organization. In 1993 the Senior Center of Rich Township was named the Shirley J. Green Senior Center in her honor. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, George and Hortense Tuerck, her husband Kenneth Green, her sister Elma Hoff (nee Tuerck), and brother in law Norman Hoff. She is survived by her sons Michael (Kathy) Green of Plainfield, IL and Steven (Robin) Green of Warrenville, IL and brother David (Prema) Tuerck of Franklin, MA. She was loving grandmother of Kevin (Stephanie) Green, Dana (Heather) Green, Matthew Green, Amy (Rob) McLear, Laura (Alex) Wilga, Carter Farrar and four great grandchildren - Madison Green and Evan, Alexa and Nathan McLear. She was loving aunt of Kathy Scott, Thomas (Judy) Hoff , James Hoff (deceased), Karen (Gary) Voelker, Ken (Tina) Hoff and John (Rachel) Tuerck as well as eleven great nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from on Thursday, October 6, 2016 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Hirsch West End Funeral Home 3501 W. Lincoln Hwy., Matteson, IL. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, October 7, 2016 at Hirsch West End Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Skyline Memorial Park in Monee.
