Sonja Van Weezel age 86 passed away at home surrounded by family on December 2, 2021. Sonja was the daughter of Martha Engels Gerritsen and Heindrick Gerritsen. She was born on August 2,1935 in Amsterdam, Holland and is preceded in death by her husband Herman, both parents, and her brother Johannes Gerritsen. In 1956, Sonja married Herman Van Weezel in Amsterdam. Soon after, the couple decided to move to the United States in search of a better life. They were married for 58 years and had 3 daughters, Patricia (Kim) Samuelson, Monique (Carmelo) Sanchez, and Lisa (Michael) Alleva. Sonja was a homemaker and day care provider for over thirty years. She loved taking care of children, playing board games, traveling, swimming, and animals. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. In addition to her three daughters, Sonja is survived by seven grandchildren; Joshua, Jacqueline, Brooke (Ryan), Steven (McKenzie), Daniel, Nicholas, and Anthony. Services for Sonja will be Saturday, December 18th from 10 AM to 12 PM at Lain-Sullivan funeral home in Park Forest, Ill.
