Obituary

Vanetta moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1936 where she received her formal education and then moved to St. Anne, Illinois where she graduated from St. Anne High School in 1951. She decided to further her education by attending Cortez Peters Business College in Chicago. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized into the Baptist church. During her Christian walk she joined several other churches but she felt most at home when she joined Compassion Baptist Church (formerly Merrill Avenue). She was an active servant where she enjoyed going to Sunday school and working in the Nursery. She began her career at Spiegel in 1952 and later retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs in 1997. She married her true love, James Hamby on January 18, 1986. Together they loved traveling and cooking all kinds of exotic foods. Her best moments included attending Cortez Peters Business College and having her children, son Everett and daughter Loretta whom she loved and cherished dearly. Vanettas spirit was majestic and her awareness of her own unique sense of humor kept her and everyone around her laughing, fully present and alive in the moment. She enjoyed entertainment and cooking and went to the movies regularly. She was well known for being a second mom to many. Vanetta Hamby passed away Feb. 26, 2018 in peace, surrounded by her loving daughter and son-law.
