Albert Newson

Albert Newson Jr., age 80 of Chicago, Illinois passed away on Sunday, November 12, 2023.

Albert was born August 18, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois to the union of Albert Newson and Mae Bea Haley-Newson.  After graduating from Dunbar High School in 1960 Albert worked a series of odd jobs until June 1963 when he followed a dream of being in the US Marines.  He was accepted into the Marines, left home for basic training but returned after only 6 weeks because of health problems.

When Albert returned from the Marines he pursued his love for cooking.  He worked as Head Chef for the then very popular Henrici’s Restaurant in downtown Chicago for several years.  He was also a chef for the downtown Marriot Hotel.  Albert worked as head chef during a time when chefs were not expected to clean behind themselves.  As a result, Albert expected family members to clean when he cooked.  Everyone enjoyed Albert’s food but dreaded cleaning the kitchen when he prepared meals.

Albert had a heart for spirituality, and he believed in the God of the scriptures.  He accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Mt. Pisgah MB Church under Rev. Joseph Wells.  Albert’s favorite song of praise was “How Great Thou Art”. 

Albert was preceded in death by his parents Albert Newson, Sr., and Mae Bea Haley-Newson, brothers Alan, Fred, Larry, Jackie, 1 sister Charlene Newson and 1 bonus son Khalil Shaheed.

He leaves to cherish his memory; Albert Newson (Roady Ann) of Rincon,Georgia, Mae Shorter (Eld. Boysie), Oscar Newson both of Chicago, Illinois, 3 sisters, Esther Goldstein, Darlene Newson both of Chicago and Elizabeth Hale Waterloo, Iowa 15 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
