American Veteran 01

Deacon William D. Maune

June 10, 1924 ~ October 24, 2019 (age 95) 95 Years Old

Tribute

Maune, William D. (Bill),  beloved husband of the late Winifred T. Maune, passed away on October 24, 2019 at the age of 95. Devoted father of Bernadette Maune, Mary (Charles Winer) Fote, William  (Janet) Maune, Anne Bell, and Joseph (Patricia) Maune, adored Grandfather of Christopher (Elizabeth) Mulderink, Matthew (Angela) Mulderink, Charles (Kristine) Fote, the late Kathleen (Fote) Haraburda, William Maune Jr., Lauren(Ben) Cole and Colin Bell, Gregory (Sarah), Timothy(Christine) Maune and Adam Winer. Cherished great grandfather of Nicholas, Abigail, Charles, Maxwell, Zoey, Courtney, Brendan, Matthew, Thomas, Jeremy, Molly and Aiden.

Bill was a combat veteran who served his country in the Army Air Corps in World War II as a ball turret gunner and armorer on a B24, flying 35 missions in the European theatre from 1944 to the end of the war. He married the love of his life, Winnie on a furlough in August 1944. On returning home he worked as a steamfitter, an exterminator  and eventually was employed by Eastman Kodak. During his career with Kodak, he was transferred from New York to Chicago, then Connecticut, then Massachusetts, then Rochester, New York where he retired in 1982.

He was ordained a deacon in the Catholic Church in April, 1982. This decision was logical because he and his wife Winnie not only raised five children but were very involved in ministry together, (teaching, mentoring, working with the poor) in various church related spiritual and corporal works of mercy. In 1994, they returned to Park Forest and St. Irenaeus Parish (when 70 years old) and became immediately active as a deacon couple in the church and community (volunteered at Respond Now). Then suddenly in December 2001, without warning Bill lost sight in both eyes due to advanced wet macular degeneration. Despite his blindness and my mothers spinal stenosis they continued their ministries, although dad retired from the deaconate in 2002. When Winnie passed in 2012 dad continued to volunteer as a minister of the Eucharist and at the St. Irenaeus food pantry until the Monday before he experienced a massive stroke on October 11, 2019.
