G. Stephen Lloyd

October 24, 1935 – May 19, 2023

G. Stephen (Steve) Lloyd of Park Forest left us on May 19, 2023 after a battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Steve was born in Joliet, Illinois to the late May (Brown) and George Lloyd and was a proud graduate of Joliet Township High School. He received his bachelor’s degree from Swarthmore College and Master of Government Administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. After working for the Chicago Police Department, he had a lifelong career as a municipal government consultant and loved traveling the country helping local and state governments operate more efficiently and effectively. In his off hours, Steve supported his children’s activities and sports, hitting hundreds of pop-flies and applauding countless performances. He was a consummate violinist from a young age and enjoyed playing in the Southwest Symphony Orchestra and at Freedom Hall in Park Forest. For 35 years, Steve served on the Park Forest Police and Fire Commission, hiring many of the staff still on the force as well as the first female firefighter in the southern suburbs. In 2009, he received the Senior Medal of Honor from Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart and upon retirement from the commission in 2016, the town’s courtroom was named for him. He was well known for his compassion; his intellect; his long service to Holy Family Episcopal Church, the community and Swarthmore College; and his impossibly quirky sense of humor.

Steve was the beloved husband of Elizabeth for over 60 years and will be much missed by his children Andrew (Sarah Lloyd) of Earlysville, VA and Anne (Marcel Veilleux) of Annapolis, MD and grandchildren Ethan, Kenzie, and Rachel Lloyd – whom he adored. He is also survived by his brother William of Loudon, TN. The family are grateful for his wonderful caregiver Katie Stluka who was with him to the end.

Services will be held Saturday, June 3, 2023 at the Church of the Holy Family, 102 Marquette St., Park Forest, IL 60466. Visitation at 10:00 am, service at 11:00 am. Memorials may be made to the church’s unrestricted endowment fund.
