Sidney Cheers IV was born July 12, 1959 to Martha Brumfield and Sidney Cheers III. However, his father was tragically killed while serving in the Army at the tender age of 19. Martha later met and married Stanley Mathies, who raised Sidney as his own and whom he called Dad.

Sidney, who was sometimes affectionately known to some as “Grumpy” or “Sid”, was born and raised in Chicago, and graduated from Corliss High School in 1978. Sidney was a hard-working man who was employed by Chicago Transportation Authority (CTA) for over 25 years.

Sidney had two beautiful children with Karen Humphries - Sidney aka “Sweepea” and Delores aka “DJ” and a beautiful daughter by Renee’ Travis - Kristin aka “Ashley”. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. His heart rejoiced when he was with his grandchildren who called him “Paw Paw,” for nothing pleased him more than being with them.

Many described Sidney as thoughtful, giving, a devoted father and grandfather, but most of all a jokester. He was a good friend and beloved patriarch of his family. Sidney was a loving and caring person that would help anyone out if he could. He made a profound impact in ways both great and small on the lives of all who knew him. His charm, quick wit, and ability to keep you laughing will surely be missed.

Sidney leaves to mourn his legacy: mother, Martha Mathies; sister, Tiffany Mathies; two daughters; Delores Humphries (Atlanta, GA) and Ashley Travis; son Sidney Humphries (Milwaukee, WI); longtime companion Michelle Young; nine grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Sidney Cheers III; stepfather, Stanley Mathies; and grandfather, Sidney Cheers II to whom he had a very special and loving relationship with.
