To the Gavin family:
Please accept my sincere condolences in the loss of Mrs. Gavin. At this very difficult time, may you find some comfort in the sure hope the Bible gives you of seeing her alive and well again (John 5:28, 29). Until then, may the God of all comfort strengthen and comfort you. Again, I am very sorry for your loss.

Gayle was my cousin and my friend. She lived one block from me for a few years before I moved to Colorado. For the past twenty years, we talked on the phone almost every Saturday or Sunday evening. We each expressed our views on almost anything you can imagine. Sometimes we disagreed and a heated discussion would ensue but we always ended the conversations as friends. I'm going to miss those phone calls and I'm going to miss my friend. God speed Gayle. Give hugs to all the family that is already there waiting for you.

Today I am really remembering my friend Gayle Luker Gavin who died on May 28. I am thinking of the wonderful times we shared over the span of 51 years. Longer than half a century, time for lots of memories! I met her through Richard, she ran with the same crowd as he did before he went to SIU. From the evening I met her, I was enthralled. She was so well read, her conversation witty, great with snappy repartee.

Sometimes she would come to visit me in Carbondale, riding her father's majic carpet (the IC railroad, his employer) on a pass.

A few years later Bob came home from the Navy and assumed the role of Knight in Shining Armor, the role he played to her dying breath. They were married in a very small ceremony in front of her parents' fireplace, and we were honored to witness it.

We went to the Earl of Oldtown quire often to see Steve Goodman and John Prine, both of whom I still listen to today. Thank you Gayle for introducing me to them.

Both Bob and Gayle laughed frequently and with gusto. I'm going to close with that memory, of the laughs, and hope that Bob is able to find his again
